Ray Balkwill, SWAC
Ray is a well known West Country artist who paints landscapes in watercolour, pastels, mixed media and oils. He studied at Exeter College of Art and over three decades of painting has held many successful solo exhibitions. He has also shown in numerous group and open exhibitions, including the R.I., R.W.A and the South West Academy. He is an author of seven books and a regular contributor to art magazines. Ray has also made two art instruction DVD’s with APV Films – Capturing Estuary Moods and Capturing Coastal Moods.
In 2006 he was elected an Academician in the South West Academy of Fine and Applied Arts and has been a member of the Saint Ives Society of Artists since 1999. Ray is a strong advocate of painting en plein air, his main objective being to capture the mood and ‘spirit’ of a place. Living as he does on the coast, it is little wonder that the wide open spaces of sea, estuary and sky have been the main spring of his art.
