David TressDavid Tress grew up in London and after Art College moved to Pembrokeshire in 1976. His main interest is landscape painting but he also paints figures, buildings and urban subjects. He works in a variety of media including water-based mixed media, oils, charcoal and graphite. In 1999 he was one of 48 British artists commissioned by Royal Mail to design their millennium stamp issue. David exhibits regularly in Wales and London with occasional shows abroad including, recently, San Francisco and Amsterdam. David works by observing the landscape and absorbing the feelings and emotions that it creates in him. David has always made many drawings and in September 2003 a travelling exhibition of his drawings opened. This will tour through Wales and the English Midlands culminating in January 2005 at the Guildhall Gallery in London. In 2002 Claire Rendell published a book about David Tress. In his introduction John Russell Taylor says that with Tress “paint seems to take on a life of its own, swirling and slashing and dripping through the composition, finding its own way to bypass our intelligence and work directly on our emotion”. ![]()
