Bettina Schroeder

Bettina has been drawing and painting all her life, from her early years in the former East of Germany, through her escape with her family to the West and into her adult life. She also studied law, until moving to London in 1982, when art became her focus.

Bettina is a London based artist and also a very experienced art teacher (“Bettina is an exemplary teacher”—Nicholas Shakespeare in the “Telegraph Magazine”). She started teaching art in 1987 and ran her own painting School in North Wales for 10 years. During that time her painting courses began to move further afield (Italy, Jersey, Germany). Since then she has been running regular painting courses in Scotland, Devon, Hampshire, Tuscany and Sicily amongst other locations.

Bettina works in watercolours, oils and other media. She divides her time between landscape painting in the summer and figure painting in her London studio during the winter.

Bettina’s courses are designed for both experienced painters and beginners. Although she tutors in all media, watercolour, especially the wet-into-wet technique, is her speciality. She places great emphasis on helping students find their personal style as well as teaching the ground rules of painting.

Bettina’s love of nature is evident in her fresh and spontaneous watercolour landscapes, which she always paints en plein air. Her distinctive loose style is achieved by working wet into wet using a large brush before making more controlled brush strokes as the painting progresses. Her approach to oil painting is much the same as she begins with a sketchy underpainting and then adds layers of well defined overpainting in complementing colours.
