| Click any image to enlarge | North West Highlands Art provides the ultimate in painting courses at Brynaport. Hosted by Gillian and Mark Pattinson, you are made to feel like a welcome guest in their family home, whilst enjoying tuition from a variety of world renowned artists. Brynaport is situated at the southern end of the coastal road through the tiny west highland village of Achintraid. The views are staggering across Loch Kishorn to the ancient sandstone corries and hills of Applecross, which rise almost sheer to nearly 3,000ft. To the east the limestone hills rise more gently with hidden lochans and peaty burns. Continuing north from Achintraid one comes to the fishing village of Shieldaig and on to the majestic Torridon Hills. The light and colours, with the history and romance of the Scottish Highlands, make a most inspirational and dynamic place to paint. | | The accommodation is at Brynaport and cottages in Achintraid within walking distance of Brynaport. As each course has a different tutor there is a wide variety of styles and themes from which to choose. The courses cater for painters at all levels, and the numbers are restricted to maximise individual tuition. Art materials may be purchased from the studio shop and drawing boards are provided. It is necessary to bring your own easels and stools if required for outside work. The day usually starts with a talk or demonstration in the studio, followed by painting in the immediate surroundings; or a short drive to one of the many inspiring locations nearby. | | | | | Painting trips are made to Applecross over the Bealach-na-Ba (Pass of the Cattle), the highest, steepest road in Britain, to the attractive fishing village of Shieldaig with its beautiful Caledonian pine forested island, and to Plockton, a picturesque yachting village with palm trees along the front. During the week there is often a boat trip to Kishorn Island or beaches inaccessible by road. | Non-painters and dogs are welcome. Lochcarron boasts one of Scotland’s first 9-hole golf courses. This is a wonderful walking area. Within easy driving distance are the Torridon Hills with several Munros. For garden lovers there are the Attadale Gardens, near Strathcarron and the National Trust Gardens of Inverewe. Other places of interest are Eilean Donan Castle, the Isle of Skye, Lochcarron Weavers, craft shops and local inns serving seafood. You are welcome to accompany the painters wherever they go to paint. | | | | Breakfast is served in the dining room at 8.00am. A large variety of lunch ingredients are laid out to allow you to make your own picnic. Towards the end of the painting day, tea and cake are served in the studio. If you haven’t already worked up an appetite for dinner you might like to choose a walk from the “Area Walks Booklet”. The three-course dinners include local produce and wonderful seafood. Before dinner on the last night of the course refreshments are served in the studio with a display of the week’s work. | |
